Sometimes you don't need a graded quiz — you need a fast, honest read of the room. Polls and backchannels give every student a voice, including the ones who never raise a hand.
Why it works
Anonymity lowers the stakes. Students answer truthfully about what they understand — so your next move is based on real data, not the three confident voices.
Formats and when to use them

Common tools
Mentimeter, Poll Everywhere, and Slido all do live polls and word clouds. Google Forms works for quick untimed polls. For a running question feed, a shared doc or a dedicated backchannel tool works well.
Three ready-to-use routines
- Entry read: a 1–5 confidence scale on yesterday's topic to plan today's start.
- Mid-lesson check: a single multiple-choice poll; if under ~80% correct, reteach now.
- Exit word cloud: "one word for how today went" — a fast pulse on the room.
Keep it safe and honest
Anonymous doesn't mean unmonitored — project results live so the norm stays respectful, and remind students it's for learning, not laughs. Avoid collecting names or personal details in a poll tool.
