A maker space runs on routines. A few simple rules and a short weekly checklist keep everyone safe and your gear working long after the novelty wears off.
Non-negotiables
The printer nozzle reaches ~200 °C and the bed can be hot too. The print head moves without warning. Students never reach into a running printer, and only you handle hot parts and sharp removal tools.
Set up the space right
- Place printers in a ventilated area, away from where students sit for long periods.
- Keep a clear "no-touch zone" around each printer while it runs.
- Use PLA to minimize fumes; avoid ABS/resin without proper ventilation.
- Store removal tools (scrapers, snips) with you, not in the student bins.
Classroom rules students can read
Maker space rules 1. Hands out of the printer while it is running. 2. Only the teacher removes prints and touches hot parts. 3. Report anything that smells, smokes, or sounds wrong — stop the printer. 4. Count tools and parts back into the bin before you leave. 5. Wash hands after handling filament and electronics.
A 5-minute weekly checklist
- Wipe the build plate; re-level if prints have been lifting.
- Check the nozzle for stuck plastic; clear the surface.
- Look for filament tangles on the spool; reseal spools in their bin.
- Tidy and count electronics parts; recharge or check battery packs.
- Note anything that needs a part or a fix so it doesn't pile up.
When something goes wrong

Keep records
A shared doc where you log maintenance and issues makes it far easier to get a repair approved — and to hand the space to next year's teacher.
